Revolve Games Devlog 01
Pylon Defense Development Update
As we progress beyond the pre-production phase of Pylon Defense, our development efforts are now focused on establishing the game's foundational elements. Currently in the prototype stage, our primary objective is the refinement and optimization of core systems and mechanics. The visuals showcased in our latest Devlog serve as preliminary placeholders, integral to this phase of development. These early representations are crucial for testing and fine-tuning gameplay dynamics, laying the groundwork for the subsequent integration of advanced graphics and detailed aesthetics. This stage is pivotal in our development roadmap, setting the stage for the more intricate aspects of Pylon Defense.
The above video presents an early prototype of Pylon Defense, focusing primarily on the development of core game mechanics and foundational systems. At this stage, our emphasis is on solidifying these underlying elements before integrating graphical content.
Progress Highlights
Underlying Systems
Our focus has been on getting the core systems of Pylon Defense operational and robust. This includes everything from the game's physics engine to the user interface, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for players. The successful implementation of these systems is a testament to our team's technical prowess and sets the stage for the exciting features we plan to build on this foundation.
Transition from Lyra
We began with Lyra as our base module, providing us with a starting point for development. However, as our vision for Pylon Defense evolved, we realized the need for a more customized approach. This led us to make the decision to strip most of the Lyra code and features out of the engine. Rebuilding it from the ground up has not only allowed us to fine-tune the game mechanics and features to align perfectly with our vision but also to infuse the game with unique elements. The new, streamlined codebase is now more efficient, flexible, and tailored to the specific needs of Pylon Defense.
Module Updates
Networking Module
We've built a custom networking module from the ground up, leveraging Unreal's built-in features. Each game will be hosted on a server, with different maps accommodating varying numbers of players – from two-player maps to larger ones supporting up to seven players.
Construction Module
This module handles all in-game construction. Beyond the turret construction showcased in our videos, we have a variety of constructables planned. Each class/race will have access to unique constructables, in addition to general buildables available to all.
Abilities Module:
Designed for flexibility, this module can handle modifications and upgrades to abilities, giving us a lot of creative freedom.
General Map Overview
Our current test map is a 'snake' style layout with multiple entry points for enemies. It's designed to test various development scenarios, offering diverse building locations and strategic challenges.
Wave Module
The wave system is mostly complete, featuring various enemy types including minibosses, bosses, runners, and assaults.
It's equipped with dynamic scaling to adjust difficulty based on player performance and the number of players in the map.
Class Module
We've started work on the core trinity of classes (Damage, Tank, Support) and are focusing on refining these before expanding further. The base classes, talents, talent upgrades, and abilities for these are currently in place.
Character Modelling
We are making good progress on modelling two base characters. Our main character is currently in a 'low poly' state, a crucial step before we add detailed textures. This stage is about setting up the basics before we apply more complex effects like scratches and wear to give the character a realistic look.
We're also nearly done with the modeling of our female base character, which will add variety to our character lineup.
For texturing, we're planning to use advanced techniques for a consistent style across all characters. This approach is efficient and will ensure high-quality visuals for our characters.
Upcoming Focus in Pylon Defense Development
As we continue advancing Pylon Defense, here’s an overview of our key focus areas and upcoming milestones:
Graphics Enhancement for Investor Showcase
In the upcoming weeks, a significant portion of our efforts will be channeled towards enhancing the game's graphics. This initiative is aimed at refining the visual presentation for an upcoming investor showcase, ensuring that Pylon Defense is displayed in the best light possible.
Continued Progress Across Various Modules
Concurrently, the development team will maintain their momentum on several critical aspects of the game. This includes ongoing work on class development, ability testing, turret mechanics, and the refinement of talents and traits. These efforts are essential in enriching the gameplay experience and adding depth to the game's mechanics.
Transition to Level Design
We are rapidly approaching a stage where actual level design becomes necessary. With the foundational development phase almost complete, the focus will soon shift to creating detailed and engaging game environments.
